The Annual General Meeting of the Mount Royal Municipal Association will be held at Town Hall on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 7 p.m. Members and residents are invited to intend. The theme of the meeting will be to ask the residents “What can the MRMA do for you?”.

The past year has been an eventful and challenging one for the Mount Royal Municipal Association (MRMA). In September after the Summer recess when I was appointed President, following completion of the two year term of my predecessor, campaigning for the 2018 municipal elections was well underway. As has been our practice, and in keeping with our mission, we decided to a host a “Meet the Candidates Evening “ in late October ten days prior to the actual elections . Early that month, two of our long standing directors tendered their resignations to participate in the elections and it wasn’t until January 2018 that we were able to regain our bearings and get on with the carrying out of our mission which follow the activities of Council, act as observer of what is going on in the Town and to identify and represent issues of concern to Town residents.

In furtherance of this mission, we are represented at the monthly meetings of Council, at meetings organized to deal with crime issues and of events of other organizations active in the Town. We have also taken an interest in and heard from residents who have brought their concerns to our attention such as potential noise and disruptions that could result for the construction and installation of REM, the condition of the Cornwall bridge, speeding on certain Town thoroughfares, the inconvenience caused by certain renovation and construction projects, the undesirable effects of speculators dealing in Town properties, issues related to the planned sports centre and mega centre Royalmount, and a host of other matters.

In the area of membership, despite our efforts which have taken the form of distributing flyers, promoting our organization in the Town news papers and word of mouth, all we have succeeded in doing is in maintaining membership level at about 120 members. Somehow membership growth has eluded us despite our attempts to convince Town residents that the grater our membership, the greater will be the positive influence we will have.

I am pleased to report that there has been one major, positive development for the MRMA this year and that is the development of our new web site and the joining of our team of Barbara Lapointe, a long time Town resident who adds a most dimension to what we will be able to accomplish through getting word of our activities out and monitoring developments on the Island which could have an effect on the Town. The new web site will serve as channel of communication with the citizens of the Town for who we look to for support. You can find it at associationmunicipale.wordpress.com .
